Evolution and Providence

Evolution and Providence: Macroevolution, the Modern Synthesis, and Theological Interpretation grew out of my conviction that discussions of faith and science must take macroevolution seriously, not merely in passing. Many Christian treatments reference evolution at a high level, but few linger over large‑scale patterns-speciation, extinction, deep time-and ask how doctrines of creation and providence might be responsibly articulated in their presence.

In this book, I begin with a clear exposition of macroevolution as understood within the modern synthesis and its contemporary developments. I then examine classical and modern Christian accounts of providence, asking how they have imagined God's governance of a dynamic and sometimes violent natural order. With those resources in hand, I propose an interpretive framework in which divine purpose can be affirmed without denying the genuine contingency and sometimes tragic character of evolutionary history.

Chapters address themes such as randomness and lawfulness, the role of mass extinctions, convergent evolution, and the emergence of consciousness, each time probing how these features of the natural world might be read theologically. I argue that Christian confession need not shrink from the grandeur and costliness of evolutionary creativity; rather, it can discern in them a world invited into open‑ended participation in God's purposes.

The book is written for theologians, scientists with theological interests, graduate students, and pastors who desire more than slogans about "compatibility." It can serve as a main text in courses on science and religion, a supplementary reading in doctrine classes, or a resource for sermon preparation when congregations raise hard questions about suffering, natural history, and divine care.
